“And Lot went out, and spoke unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city” Gen. 19:14-16
Lingering means to be slow in parting or in quitting something that will harm or deter your progress, or to be idle or to delay action when the time to do it is ripe. It is the opposite of being diligent or fervent to pursue God or doing His command with all alacrity. It is the complete opposite of firmly deciding to follow through on pursuing a line of action especially in order to resolve to please God or do His will. It is contrary to making a firm decision and commitment to God
Lingering also have to do with procrastination, deferring, postponing and adjoining what God has put in your spirit man to do to a later time or when you think it is convenient to do it. Lingering results in late obeying God or doing what ought to be beneficial to you out of the timing or season set for it to be done by your maker. We know that God makes all things beautiful at its time, so doing things out of the set time will negatively affect the result you are supposed to get.
“I am resolved no longer to linger, Charmed by the world’s delight; Things that are higher, things that are nobler, These have allured my sight”
Lingering to obey God or follow His preset or ordained line of action will get us a loggerhead with God. The most important resolve or top priority in Christendom is to put God first in everything followed by assembling with other saints [Matt. 6:33]. We must not linger in obeying God or in serving him with all our heart [Job 36:11-12]
We must be very firm in all actions that helps our growth, progress and maturity as Christians by following the commandments ardently; reading, studying, meditating and doing the word of the Lord.
Are you diligent? Are you “applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love” 2 Peter 1:5-7
Are you “diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you” [2 Pet. 1:10]? Are you fervent in business or your vocation?
Or, are you lingering? “Linger” means to be slow or reluctant to act.
God’s word teaches us not to linger when it comes to positive change and becoming a more fruitful Christian. Rather than lingering, we are to be “not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord” (Rom. 12:11).
Likewise, Jesus strongly warms Christians who are lingering. To Christians who had left their first love, Jesus says: “Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place — unless you repent'” [Rev. 2:5].
To be a better Christian, we must resolve to be different from the world. Like the song says: “I am resolved to enter the kingdom, Leaving the paths of sin; Friends may oppose me, foes may beset me, Still will I enter in”
This has always been God’s desire for His children, not to linger in walking the old path that we treaded as unbelievers but to follow the new path that leads to life else the old will lead us on the broad way that leads to destruction.
“Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness … Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,’ says the Lord. ‘And do not touch what is unclean; and I will welcome you. And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me,’ says the Lord Almighty'” 2 Cor. 6:14, 17-18
It is true that Lot looked and longed for the naturally well watered Sodom by lifting up his eyes [Gen. 13:10]. His lust was aroused for what he thought will bring blessings that is the plain of Jordan [Gen. 13:11]; and he left the abode of safety and journeyed east and separated from Abraham the carrier of the blessings of God and his wayward character was ascertained as he was drunk to stupor as to lay with his daughters and do not know that he did.
See how a man can descend to love the things of the world and also have its character and nature to the point that god of mammon has taken hold of his heart and when he was asked to leave all and follow God away from destruction…he lingered …and was dragged out forcefully the Lord had mercy on them, else they would have perished with the others in Sodom [Gen. 19:15-17]. Its evidence where the love of Mr. and Mrs. Lot were, for the wife eventually looked back and became a pillar of salt.
“Do not love or cherish the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh [craving for sensual gratification] and the lust of the eyes [greedy longings of the mind] and the pride of life [assurance in one’s own resources or in the stability of earthly things]–these do not come from the Father but are from the world [itself]. And the world passes away and disappears, and with it the forbidden cravings (the passionate desires, the lust) of it; but he who does the will of God and carries out His purposes in his life abides (remains) forever”1 John 2:15-17 AMP
Whenever we cherish, lust after, long for or affectionately seek for things of this world that is contrary to spiritual character, lifestyle and nature incessantly; it will cause our whole system to want to reject the TRUTH and stay in a place physically or spiritually that will be the route or broad way that leads to hell fire. God is set to draw us out like He did for Lot, his wife and two daughters like elements of mercy drawn out of the fire.
“Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities…But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withers, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever…These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speak great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage” Jude 1:10-13, 16
Lingering in the works of the flesh and not crossing over to develop the fruit of the spirit will negatively affect the good that is supposed to come to us from the Presence of the Lord [Eph. 5:19-24].
If the above character of the world and nature of Satan is found in you, then there is the possibility that you will linger and continue to wallow in sin if you do not make the decisive decision to repent of these works of darkness and come out, and be separated in order to serve God in an acceptable fashion. Let the lust of the eyes and lust for what the world produces and provides that causes ungodly affections be exterminated from your heart; that you can come out and be translated into the Kingdom of God on planet earth.
Lust for pleasures, over accumulation of earthly goods, loose parenting of your precious children, longing for earthly positions and love of mammon, narcotics and alcoholism are tools in the hand of Satan to derail you on the path of eternal life. Do not linger in that mess anymore! Submit to God! Resist the devil! He will flee from you!
The time is very short! Jesus is coming back very soon! All the pleasurable things on the earth shall burn like elements. Do not lose out on earth and the eternal bliss coming soon. Hell is real!
